i just hooked up my surround sound and i really need help on hearing it in regular tv (not dvd)?

yeah so i have an insignia hi def television (best buy generic brand) and i just bought sony surround sound. I have somehow managed to get quality sound from radio, dvd”s and any audio dvice i plug in. but when i try for tv, all i hear r the speakers from the tv. what am i doing wrong?

Connect optical or composite cables ( red & white ) from cable box or TV to Sony system.
